What Does a Functional Assessor Do?
Functional Assessors are registered healthcare professionals who carry out structured assessments to understand how a person’s health condition or disability affects their daily life and mobility. Assessments take place in assessment centres, offices, or remotely via telephone or video, rather than on hospital wards.
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary clinical and quality team, Functional Assessors evaluate individuals with a wide range of physical, mental health, neurological and long-term conditions. Roles are typically delivered by private providers contracted by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), although many clinicians transition from NHS backgrounds.
Key duties include:
- Conducting face-to-face, telephone or video assessments
- Reviewing medical evidence and clinical history
- Assessing functional ability and daily living needs
- Producing detailed, evidence-based reports
- Working within clinical governance and quality standards
How to Become a Functional Assessor
To work as a Functional Assessor in the UK, you must be a registered healthcare professional with an active NMC, HCPC or GMC registration. Eligible backgrounds include nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, paramedicine and medicine.
Most employers require a minimum of 12 months of post-registration clinical experience, although this can come from a wide range of settings such as acute care, community services, mental health, primary care or rehabilitation.
When you start a Functional Assessor role, employers provide full training (typically 4–8 weeks) covering assessment criteria, report writing, clinical reasoning and IT systems. Ongoing mentoring, audit feedback and CPD support are standard.
If you’re returning to practice, you may need to complete an NMC Registration or Return to Practice process before applying.
