Working primarily across our adult mental health wards, you'll support the delivery of psychological assessment, formulation and intervention for individuals experiencing acute mental health difficulties and personality disorders. There may also be opportunities to gain experience within our CYPMHS services for those with an interest in working with children and young people.

What you will be doing

Reporting to the lead psychologist, you will join the psychology team where you will be guided and supervised as you assist with assessments, formulations and treatments to people within a group and 1- 1 setting. As an Assistant Psychologist, you will assist in clinically related administration, conduct of audits, collection of statistics, development of audit and/or research projects, teaching and project work.

You will be working with adults with acute mental health needs and personality disorders, addressing conditions like depression, self-harm, physical health concerns, and psychological distress including trauma.

This role will be 37.5 hours a week at our adult ward. Monday to Friday. 9am to 5pm.

As an Assistant Psychologist you will be:

• Contributing to psychological assessments.
• Providing 1:1 psychological intervention to service users, under weekly supervision of a qualified psychologist.
• Designing and delivering group interventions informed by DBT, CFT and ACT to service users, under the supervision of a qualified psychologist.
• Maintaining clinical databases as required.
• Completing and scoring weekly outcome measures across both adult wards. Interpreting and appropriately disseminating these to the wider care team.
• Under supervision undertaking clinical tasks, such as writing reports for various audiences, including weekly internal care review reports for internal and external professionals, and contributing to monthly and quarterly hospital-wide review reports.
• Chairing community meeting for service users across both adult wards on a monthly basis, recording notes and sharing these
• Collaborating with external care providers, ensuring accurate documentation of sessions, maintaining accurate databases of outcome measures and compiling these for quarterly review reports.
• Service evaluation and other research tasks including collecting, analysing, and reporting upon an array of statistics
• Undertaking clinically relevant audits
• Supervision with a qualified psychologist on a weekly basis. Peer supervision with Assistant Psychologists.
• Work collaboratively as part of the wider therapies team, including family and systemic psychotherapists, art psychotherapist, and occupational therapy.

To be successful in this role, you will need:

• Minimum of upper second class honours degree (2:1) in Psychology and be eligible for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society (BPS)
• Further post graduate training in relevant area for professional psychology, and / or research design and analysis
• Previous experience of working in a clinical setting with individuals presenting with challenging behaviour or equivalent
• Previous experience with supporting the delivery of coping skills groups (DBT, ACT, CFT)
• Previous experience with writing reports under supervision
• Creative thinking, clinical efficacy and a strong commitment to working with evidenced based models of therapeutic intervention.
• To be computer literate
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to compile and interpret statistical data.
• Experience of maintaining office systems and undertaking administration tasks
• Strong organisation skills
• To meet professional practice expectations including the BPS code of ethics and conduct

Join the team at Potters Bar Clinic providing care for young people and adults with acute mental health needs and personality disorders in an established 24-hour care environment. The CAMHS Tier 4 Low Secure services are for young people aged 13–18.

Potters Bar Clinic is located in a residential area, only one minute drive from the M25 and a short bus ride from Potters Bar Train Station, with a bus stop right outside, making it an easy commute for most.
