Lead Theatre Practitioner - Anaesthetics
Location: The Harborne Hospital, London
Salary: Competitive + Benefits
Contract Type: Permanent
Working Hours: Monday-Friday, occasional Saturdays, short & long days
We are looking for a Lead Theatre Practitioner - Anaesthetics to join us at The Harborne Hospital, part of HCA Healthcare UK. This brand-new, £100 million, purpose-built, 50-bed multi-speciality private hospital is opening in Birmingham in 2023. Situated on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham campus, it has been designed with deep clinical infrastructure, state-of-the-art equipment and highly skilled teams to deliver full clinical pathways across a wide range of specialties, from Cardiology and Cancer to Complex Surgery.
As the fourth NHS partnership within the HCA network, The Harborne Hospital works closely with University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Trust to deliver exceptional care at every level of complexity.
As Anaesthetic Lead, the role centres on shaping exceptional patient care and inspiring colleagues across the theatre environment. Clinical leadership is at the heart of this position-ensuring safe, evidence-based and compassionate care for every patient undergoing anaesthesia or surgery. Preparing the anaesthetic room to meet the individual needs of patients and Anaesthetists, offering specialist knowledge, and acting as a visible role model all form part of the daily rhythm. Supporting and developing colleagues through mentoring, assessment and shared learning is key to building a confident, capable and cohesive team.
Leadership responsibilities include guiding staffing and allocation of anaesthetic duties, working closely with the Surgical Services Manager on appraisals and professional development plans, and ensuring resources are used effectively and responsibly.
The role also contributes to managing performance, sickness, grievance or disciplinary matters in line with HCA policies. Maintaining a safe, clean and aseptic environment is essential, along with ensuring equipment is checked, functional and any issues promptly reported.
There may be occasions to deputise for the Surgical Services Manager. Clinical duties include preparing patients, assisting with procedures and providing initial emergency care across both anaesthetics and surgery. Collaboration is central-sharing knowledge, supporting colleagues and contributing to a high-performing theatre team where exceptional care thrives.
At HCA UK, we care about what you care about. We care that you want to deliver the highest standards of care. We care that you want a career that inspires pride. We care that your working environment supports your wellbeing. Let us care for you and your career, the same way you care for others.
What You'll Bring
• Experienced Theatre Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP)
• NMC/HCPC Registered
• Anaesthetics experience
• Anaesthetics course (nursing)
• Mentorship course or supervisory experience
• ALS and airway management certification
