What Qualifications Do I Need for a Career in Healthcare?

Discover the qualifications you need for a career in healthcare in the UK — from GCSEs and Access courses to university degrees and professional registration.

The UK healthcare sector is enormous, and it needs people. From midwives and physiotherapists to radiographers, paramedics, dietitians, and operating department practitioners, healthcare offers some of the most secure and rewarding careers you can train for. If you are wondering what qualifications you need to get started, the honest answer is that it depends on the role, but almost every clinical and allied health profession shares the same foundations. This guide walks you through those foundations, stage by stage, from your first Level 2 qualifications through to applying for a healthcare degree at university.

Whether you are a school leaver, an adult thinking about retraining, or a healthcare assistant who wants to qualify in a registered profession, there is a clear pathway for you, and A-Levels are not the only way in.

Applying to University Through UCAS

When your Level 3 qualification is complete, you apply to university through UCAS, the central admissions service. Universities welcome Access to HE graduates and treat the diploma as a recognised entry qualification, awarding UCAS points based on the grades you achieve in your units. Your application will usually also include a personal statement, evidence of your Level 2 English and Maths, and any relevant work or voluntary experience in a care setting, which is highly valued for healthcare courses.

Because acceptance and points requirements vary between universities and courses, it is always sensible to check the entry requirements for your specific course directly with the university before you apply.
