About us
Cygnet Kenney House is our hospital for women, located in Oldham, providing a safe and secure care pathway for women with mental health needs. This facility is born out of the increasing need for mental health care in all parts of the UK.
The hospital is actually the renovation of a former care home in Wester Hill Road. It has been named after Oldham suffragette, Annie Kenney. It will be a place of sanctuary for women suffering with their mental health, a place where wellness is at the forefront. We will provide care in a safe and comfortable environment to promote successful recovery.
We have collaborated with the NHS to develop services to support women from the North West to be treated closer to home.
There will be three wards at Cygnet Kenney House; Billington Ward, a 12 bed specialist Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Baldock Ward, a 16 bed Acute service and Harben Ward, a 16 bed mental health rehabilitation and recovery service.
The PICU and Acute environments will offer rapid access to care, supporting women to move quickly and safely through to the most appropriate and least restrictive setting.
The mental health rehabilitation and recovery ward (level 2) will support individuals moving on from the Acute ward, as well as external referrals from other services such as secure, CAMHS, and more.

Cygnet Kenney House - service overview
The setting is designed with wellness in mind. Our specially trained staff provide therapeutic support that focuses on improving each individual’s quality of life.
The hospital is made up of three wards.
Billington Ward
This is our specialist PICU (Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit) for women aged 18+ detained under the Mental Health Act, or informal admission. It has 12 beds. Billington Ward will accept emergency and crisis admissions. Our aim is a short, rapid intervention to help individuals regain a sense of control and order in their lives, so they can move to a less restrictive care setting and ultimately return home. This Ward provides expert, intensive, short-term, individualised care for women detained under the Mental Health Act. Individuals will present with increased risks that require them to be assessed and treated in a PICU environment.
Baldock Ward
Baldock Ward is a Female Acute ward with 16 beds. It provides a safe and stabilising environment for women experiencing an acute episode of mental illness and require an emergency admission.
Baldock Ward is about assessing and treating women in the least restrictive environment and planning for discharge in a robust and timely fashion. With a focus on stabilisation, we support individuals to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community. It is for women aged 18 and over.
Harben Ward
Harben Ward is a High Support Inpatient Rehabilitation service (Level 2) with 16 beds. It offers women, aged 18 and over a safe and comfortable environment that promotes recovery and helps to bridge the gap between hospital stays and community living. Harben Ward provides a care pathway within Cygnet Kenney House, whilst also accepting external referrals. Service users may have a history of sexual abuse or domestic violence. They may have secondary diagnoses of mild learning disability, autism spectrum disorder or personality disorder.
