About us
Barchester provides nursing care across 160+ care homes. Person-centred care is at the heart of all that Barchester do.
Dementia care
All Barchester staff receive specialist dementia training, and benefit from the experience of their Dementia Care Specialist Team. Many in this team are published experts. Barchester provide care for patients suffering from all forms of dementia: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.
Residential care
Barchester’s residential care homes offer a safe place for elderly people, who are looked after according to their needs. The intention is for residential care patients to live as independently as they can, while enjoying the reassurance of support and care where needed.
Barchester mental health hospitals
Barchester also operate a number of independent mental health hospitals across England. The range of services available differs between each hospital.
These hospitals care for adults under 65 with organic mental health needs, including:
- Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias
- Alcohol-related brain injury
- Huntington’s disease
- People with histories of functional mental health issues or histories of institutional care
- People with combinations of the above needs
Barchester work collaboratively with NHS mental health foundation trusts across England.

Career development
Some of Barchester’s roles are about delivering one-to-one clinical care; others are about supporting the wellbeing of our residents and patients in broader ways. You will be given autonomy. That means, within the boundaries of a person-centred care plan, the core care decisions will be yours.
Barchester will provide the support and training you need to manage specific mental or health needs in their patients and residents.
Nurses are provided with the latest clinical developments to ensure continued learning and development.
Barchester is an organisation that takes pride in the development and promotion of its nurses through L&D initiatives and internal support.
Senior Nurses are encouraged to act as mentors to newly-qualified nurses and Senior Care Assistants.
This is a great stepping stone into a management role, and again the employer will provide you with support to help you make the move into that area.
For those just starting their career journey in care, or those looking to retrain or progress through skills development, Barchester provide a range of learning and development opportunities for new and current employees.
On offer are a wide range of apprenticeships and qualifications, with support at each step of the way on your chosen career path. New recruits are made to feel welcome with a comprehensive induction.
Nurse Preceptorship Programme
Barchester’s Nurse Preceptorship Programme is based on the ‘Standards of Education and Practice for Nurses New to Care Home Nursing’ and is designed to provide nurses with the needed support, knowledge, skills and confidence required to develop in their nursing practice over the first 18 months of employment. This is a robust preceptorship and is based on the development needs of each preceptee nurse.

This has been developed to up-skill Senior Care Assistants to assume key responsibilities and includes certified qualifications.
