It is intended to help an individual process negative images, emotions, beliefs and body sensations associated with traumatic memories that seem to be stuck and gain recovery. Schema therapy focuses on identifying and modifying early maladaptive schemas (self-defeating emotional and cognitive patterns) and schema modes (moment-to-moment emotional states) thought to underlie chronic psychological disorders.
