Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Leadership & Governance
- Chair monthly MMG meetings and ensure effective governance and decision-making.
- Ensure the MMG operates within its Terms of Reference and maintains alignment with Trust-wide safety and quality objectives.
- Supports the Chief pharmacist in the provision of quarterly Key Issues Reports and an annual report to the Patient Safety Group.
Strategic Oversight
- Oversee the development and implementation of the MMG annual work plan.
- Ensure compliance with national medication safety alerts and guidance.
- Monitor and ratify medicines-related policies and procedures, including procurement, storage, prescribing, administration, and monitoring.
Risk & Compliance
- Review and monitor medicines-related risks and ensure appropriate mitigation strategies are in place.
- Ensure oversight of sub-groups including the Medicines Safety Group, Safe Sedation Group, Medical Gases Group, and PGD Group. Completes the final sign off of PGD documents in the trust.
- Promote safe and secure handling of medicines, including controlled drugs.
Collaboration & Communication
- Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration across Medical, pharmacy, nursing teams and Allied health care professionals.
- Promote transparency and appropriate collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry.
- Ensure effective communication of prescribing information and guidelines across the Trust.
Quality Improvement
- Promote evidence-based, safe, equitable, and cost-effective use of medicines.
- Support audits, incident reporting, and learning from medication-related events.
- Review and approve treatment guidelines, including those from NICE and Kent & Medway committees.
Financial Stewardship
- Consider financial implications of medicines use and support cost-saving initiatives.
- Ensure systems are in place to manage high-cost medicines within financial frameworks.
