Job Description

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals with a turnover of nearly £1 billion, 1.5 million patient contacts a year and more than 11,500 staff based across 5 main sites in South East London.

The Trust provides a full range of local hospital services across its different sites, and specialist services from King’s College Hospital (KCH) site in Camberwell and the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in Bromley.

An exciting opportunity exists to join a Junior Surgical Fellowship programme in our teaching Hospital Trust. The successful candidates will rotate through 4 monthly placements in 3 of the following specialties: Trauma and Emergency Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI surgery. The rotations through these specialties will give wide exposure to all aspects of elective and emergency General Surgery. The successful applicants will form a team of Junior clinical fellows to cover the workload of a busy Trauma Centre, and Colorectal and Upper GI tertiary referral services or a DGH hospital. In addition all post-holders will be expected to participate on a 1 in 12 Rota for covering day and night time wards and theatres, for General Surgical patients. This post is not recognised by the Deanery for training. It is however F3/CT1/CT2 equivalent and it is a good preparatory period before applying for Core or Specialty training, and many previous Fellows have successfully entered training programmes.

Candidates will be supported to gain in-house experience in basic and intermediate surgical skills in clinical scenarios. There is exposure to major gastrointestinal cases, advanced laparoscopic cases, Trauma and emergency surgery. There is opportunity to perform audits, participate with scientific work and present in national and international conferences. Also there are opportunities to publish in peer review journals. Fellows will receive guidance and support in applying for HEE training programmes in the future.

All candidates must be registered with the General Medical Council. The successful candidates would be expected to start latest by August 2019
