King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), is one of the UK’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals; with a turnover of nearly £1 billion, 1.5 million patient contacts a year and more than 11,500 staff based across 5 main sites in South East London. The Trust provides a full range of specialist and local hospital services across its different sites.

Full maternity services are provided at Denmark Hill site in Camberwell and at the Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH) site in Bromley; including high and low risk birth settings on both sites. Antenatal and postnatal services are provided from a number of other sites, including Orpington Hospital, Queen Mary's Hospital and Beckenham. This Consultant Midwife post is based at the PRUH, which has a busy maternity department which provides care for more than 5000 women per year, and around 4500 births. We have an onsite obstetric led labour ward, successful alongside birth centre, antenatal clinic, and community midwifery services spread across various sites.

We work hard at King's to support women’s informed choices for pregnancy and birth. The role of the Consultant Midwife is key in ensuring women and their partners are given safe, high-quality, evidence-based, individualized care. We are looking for an experienced and inspirational midwife who can work in close conjunction with departmental leads and the obstetric and midwifery teams to help achieve this. The right candidate will have up to date clinical skills, knowledge and experience, and be familiar with current local and national strategies to improve safety and care in maternity. They will be a passionate advocate for women and families, and have a strong ethos of midwifery care. The individual will promote normality across all care settings; helping us to reduce intervention and improve outcomes for women and babies. The successful post holder will undertake a weekly clinic to support women with pregnancy and birth planning, including debriefing and following up care where required. They will also support the obstetric and midwifery team with teaching, case reviews, complaints and incidents, and appropriate dissemination of learning into practice. They will lead on projects to review and improve maternity care, and implement local and national projects, working in close conjunction with colleagues across the sector. They will participate in the midwifery manager on call rota and participate in departmental meetings as a key member of the senior midwifery team; both within the Trust and externally with other stakeholders such as CCG leads and South East London LMS.

The post is open to candidates with suitable experience and a commitment to improving care. The role will be highly challenging, and we require an individual who can work independently and has excellent leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. They must be able to demonstrate an understanding of change management, team dynamics, and appreciate the demands of delivering an efficient and effective maternity service which meets the requirements of women, within in the current NHS climate.
