Applications are invited for posts in the Medical Oncology department at Guy's & St Thomas' Hospitals. These posts are available from August 2019 onwards for a period of twelve months.
Department Information
Guy's and St Thomas' is one of the largest hospital trusts in the country, with around 13,200 staff; an annual turnover of more than £1.2 billion; and 2 million patient contacts a year. Our hospitals have a long and proud history, dating back almost 900 years, and have been at the forefront of medical progress and innovation since they were founded. We continue to build on these traditions and have a reputation for clinical, teaching and research excellence.
Medical Oncology forms part of the Oncology and Haematology Clinical Directorate within Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The department is internationally distinguished for its commitment to research & development and constantly strives for excellence through dedication and innovation.
Oncology at Guy's and St Thomas' has entered a new and exciting phase with a state of the art Cancer Treatment Centre (CTC) at Guy's Hospital which opened in September 2016. The CTC provides a single point for both diagnosis and treatment and will be the hub for South East London providing specialist cancer services, training, research & development whilst allowing for better treatment and improved outcomes for patients. The CTC focusses on whole person care across the cancer pathway and strive to bring treatment programmes closer to home. The opening of the new £160 million CTC at Guy's Hospital was followed by a sister centre at the Queen Mary's Sidcup site in Spring 2017. These centres will transform the delivery of cancer services across South East London ensuring patients will receive the right treatment at the right time, delivered within fewer visits and tailored to their need.
We are part of King's Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC), a pioneering collaboration between one of the world's leading research-led universities and three of London's most successful NHS Foundation Trusts. Our AHSC is one of only five in the UK and consists of King's College London, Guy's and St Thomas' Hospitals, King's College Hospital and South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trusts.
This post provides an ideal opportunity for someone interested in pursuing a career in Medical or Clinical Oncology. Successful applicants will gain experience in outpatient oncology clinics, systemic anti-cancer therapy prescribing, involvement in clinical trials and dedicated time for clinical research projects. Our department is well-recognized for its provision of specialist Medical Oncology training. Although these posts do not have educational support for specialist training, there are exciting educational opportunities, including involvement in clinical (trial) research, audit, appraisal, conference attendance and provision for study leave to be taken. We also have an active teaching programme including weekly journal club meetings.
