The directorate of Gastrointestinal Medicine and Surgery has created an exciting new Trust Doctor Training Programme for which applications are invited. The directorate is looking to appoint a Trust doctor to rotate within GI, based at St Thomas' Hospital. This is an opportunity for a CT/ST2+ level doctor (Nodal Point 3) to attach to the GI Surgery unit for 6 months with a view to extending to a year placement.
The post is vacant for immediate filling.
St Thomas' has six upper GI surgeons, Mr Atkinson, Mr Botha, Mr Hubbard, Mr Davies, Mr Gossage and Ms Baker and six colorectal surgeons - Mr Williams, Mr George, Mr Davies, Mr Darakhshan, Mr Schizas and Mr Westcott. The unit has three Emergency Surgeons - Ms Wheatstone, Mr Tomasi and Ms Oliver
Upper GI Unit has been designated the regional unit for gastro-oesophageal malignancies and specialises in oesophageal and gastric resections. The unit provides surgery for all aspects of upper gastrointestinal benign disease in addition. There is also a tertiary Endocrine Surgical service for Thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal disease.
Lower GI Unit has special interests in inflammatory bowel disease surgery, locally advanced, recurrent rectal cancer resection and laparoscopic surgery and has a tertiary referral pelvic floor unit, with regular MDMs held in each of these subspecialties.
Appointees will participate in General surgical on call team on a 1 in 8 basis and will be expected to assist the Emergency Surgeons / consultant oncall during this.
There will be ample opportunities to increase surgical experience and participate in research projects and audit.
