Barts Health NHS Trust is a large and progressive organisation dedicated to serving the health needs of the City and East London. The Division of Infection comprises Microbiology and Virology and is situated in a purpose built facility adjacent to the Royal London Hospital.
The Virology Department employs more than 50 staff. The Laboratory is processing over Apply

tests per year. We provide a comprehensive clinical and diagnostic virology service with a full range of methodologies including automated serology and molecular diagnostics. The Virology Laboratory maintains and is currently expanding, a wide range of diagnostic specialities to meet the demands of an acute teaching hospital environment and a diverse patient population. An extended day hour’s shift, as well as, a weekend shifts are in operation. The selected candidate with be expected to take part in these shifts, on a rotational basis
We are CPA accredited and “transitioning to UKAS15189 accreditation”. We are a recognised HCPC/IBMS training laboratory. Numerous opportunities exist to take advantage of the excellent CPD schemes available across Pathology. We support a variety of CPD activities and have a dedicated and qualified training team coaching staff.
We are in the process of implementing a Managed Service contract and, as part of this we are renewing a significant part of our technologies and equipment.
The Virology Department at Barts Health NHS is seeking to recruit a Senior Biomedical Scientist. Applications are invited for an enthusiastic, highly motivated, reliable, with good time management skills and a strong knowledge in diagnostic virology, senior specialist biomedical scientist.
The Department currently uses WinPath (LIMS) and comprises 4 distinct areas of work (Serology, automated commercial Nucleic Acid detection, semi-automated In-house developed nucleic acid detection and Sequencing). The Department is actively working on introducing Next Generation Sequencing technology to diagnostic virology.
As well as being the team leader for a section on the laboratory, on a rotational basis, responsibilities will include administrative roles in the management of laboratory
Applicants must have previously worked at Agenda for Change Band 6 level, Specialist Biomedical Scientist for more than 5 years.
Anyone newly appointed to the Trust will be subject to the completion of a satisfactory 6 month probationary period (this includes bank staff).
