Job Description

An exciting new opportunity has arisen for a Speech and Language therapist to work within the In-patient services for adults with learning disabilities at Lanchester Road Hospital. The in-patient service provides specialist assessment and treatment and positive behavioural support for people with a learning disability who may be experiencing a mental illness.

You will be responsible for providing specialist speech and language assessment and therapy techniques in line with the overall service delivery approach. This will include positive behaviour support, intensive treatment, training others to deliver treatment programmes, advise on alternative communication methods and approaches. The post holder will also recommend on individual service users communication needs as part of discharge planning and specifying future service provision. The post holder will be an active member of the in-patient team and engage in a culture of evidence-based practice and person-centred care.

The post holder should be motivated by the opportunity to provide Speech and Language Therapy in this new post, to develop new ways of working and enhance service provision. They should understand positive behavior support and be innovative in delivering a client-centred service to adults with learning disabilities who have complex and challenging behaviours.

The post holder will be part of a dynamic SLT service in Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, with well defined peer support, supervision systems and CPD opportunities.

The post holder will have significant experience in Speech and Language Therapy, working with service users with a learning disability, mental health difficulties and/or complex needs. The post holder will have a compassionate manner and an appreciation of the challenges that individuals with a learning disability experience.

This post will mainly focus on in-patient services but there will be opportunity for some community work (e.g. as part of a service users transition to a new service).
