Consultant in Paediatric Emergency Medicine

Full Time - 10 PAs

The Evelina London Children's Hospital (ELCH) is seeking a full time (10 PA) consultant in paediatric emergency medicine to join the existing team of 5 WTE PEM consultants. This is a new substantive post with the appointee anticipated to start ASAP. The expanded team is will provide 24hr cover 7/7 for the Children's ED.

The award winning Children's Emergency floor for the ELCH has recently been completely rebuilt and forms part of the wider Emergency Floor of St Thomas' Hospital. It is functionally and managerially an integral part of the ELCH. It comprises the children's emergency dept and a six-bedded Children's short stay unit (CSSU).

The department manages more than 29,000 attendances
ELCH admits over 25,000 patients per year of which over 8,000 are non-elective admissions; over the past year alone both elective and non-elective admitted activity have increased by an average of 8%. This growth is anticipated to continue into the coming years. ELCH has a broad reaching transformational programme entitled Fit for the Future which aims to enhance patient and family care and also has major capital plans to develop additional physical capacity to meet this demand. In addition to this over Apply outpatients attend ELCH each year.

The PEM department takes an active part in teaching, training and research and multiple exciting opportunities exist to develop your skills in a supportive environment for all grades.

The successful applicant will be expected to participate in:
  • 1. Leading in and the provision of Emergency care of the highest standard to all attendances at the paediatric emergency department including OOH and at weekends, and participation in an on-call rota overnight
  • 2. On-going care on the CSSU (up to 24hr model of care)
  • 3. Emergency Ambulatory care
  • Supporting & developing an active research portfolio
    You must be fully registered with the GMC and hold License to Practice and be on the Specialist Register, ideally with recognition of sub-specialty training in PEM or within six months of attaining your CCT or equivalent at interview stage.

    The department has a strong reputation for delivering support to junior clinicians, and is active in medical education and training both within the department and in the wider ELCH and beyond. There is an active research portfolio and participation is encouraged. There are numerous opportunities to be involved in supporting governance, training and management both within the PED and across the directorate in the ELCH.

    The post-holder will have regular contact with vulnerable adults and/or children (0-18 years) and therefore this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
