Deputy Finance Manager

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Trust’s Financial Management team for a Deputy Finance Manager at the Whipps Cross site.

Managing up to 2 direct reports, the role will encompass the provision of a complete financial service for specific portfolios as well as assisting with the wider clinical portfolio for the site. The post will also assist in the co-ordination and delivery of month end reporting in accordance with the Trust reporting timetables.

The role will focus on specific clinical areas with the following general duties:
  • To assist the clinical area Head of Finance in the provision of a complete professional financial service, including the management of the finance team to prepare consolidated financial monthly performance reports and forecasts analysing trends and variances in accordance with the Trust monthly financial timetable.

  • To support the management of the team of Management Accountants working for the clinical area. To support and develop professionally and personally including appraisals, PDP’s, objectives setting and assisting in CPD.

  • To deputise for the Senior Finance Manager in his/her absence including attendance at the clinical area or Specialty Board and presentation of expert Finance Reports.

  • To contribute to the maintenance of strong financial controls in the clinical area in line with Trust approved best practice for both expenditure and wte. In addition to provide training and guidance to budget holders in budgetary management and SFI and SO compliance.

  • To support the Management Accountant – Senior Manager in applying the costing and pricing system to SLA’s, financial appraisal and business planning and be responsible for the maintenance and continuous improvement of the areas costing and pricing systems.

  • To meet regularly with clinical area budget holders and to provide information and analysis to them. In addition to support the communication of information between them and the management accountants and other departments within Finance.
  • To assist the clinical area in identifying, implementing and monitoring cost improvement plans to support the Trusts financial stability.

  • To assist the clinical area in implementing major capital developments and realising benefits arising from these investments and to assist the Head of Finance in the planning and costing for the Directorate capital bids.

  • To prepare costing models for proposed developments and projects applications within the agreed timetable.

  • To make recommendations on improving financial control within the clinical area and if approved for the implementation and monitoring of new practise
  • To be responsible for assisting in the development of a costing and pricing system in the clinical area including the preparation of internal costing of Trust services to include HRG Reference Costs and the implementation of PbR.

  • To assist in the development and implementation of fully devolved budgets in line with the Trust budget management policy and contribute to the development of a more commercially focused culture in the clinical area.


The Candidate:

Education to a degree or equivalent

Qualified Accountant is preferred. (Exceptions can be made for Finalist candidates)

4 years minimum financial management experience

2 years experience in a management position

Previous NHS experience is desirable
