Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist

Band: AFC Band 7

Location: St Bartholomew’s Hospital

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an for a Band 7 Speech and Language Therapist to join the acute team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital (SBH). The post holder will work alongside another band 7 SLT with strong links to the team at The Royal London Hospital. The SLT team at SBH is currently a small team requiring development and as such this post would suit an existing Band 7 with experience in operational management and service development.

The position will deliver specialist services to the Bart’s Heart and Cancer Centre. The Heart Centre is Europe’s largest specialised cardiovascular centre, covering a population of three million people across north and east London, west Essex and beyond. It is also the world’s biggest centre of excellence for adults with congenital heart disease and includes a large critical care unit and state-of-the-art surgical and diagnostic facilities. There will be opportunity to further develop Speech & Language Therapy services alongside these innovative facilities.

The Barts Cancer Centre has an international reputation as a service dedicated to treating patients with both solid and hematological cancers. We provide an integrated service to over one and a half million people in northeast London, Essex and further afield, ensuring they have access to high quality, specialist cancer care.

The site has a 56 bedded cardiac and oncology ACCU. The successful applicant will provide clinical management of patients across critical care and specialist cardiology and cardiothoracic wards as well as other specialist services including oncology and respiratory, which requires management of complex patients undergoing oncological and respiratory therapies. Due to the complexity of this caseload, the successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work with several multidisciplinary teams and maintain skills across neurology and voice.

The postholder should have experience in working in a busy acute setting, with a strong background in managing swallowing and communication disorders particularly in ACCU patients. There is some need to provide acute rehabilitation; therefore a background in managing acute neurological conditions is essential. The postholder will have skills in videofluoroscopy, managing acute tracheostomy and ventilated patients. Experience in FEES is desirable, however support and training can be provided.

The postholder will be part of join the wider adult Speech & Language Therapy service and will have regular opportunities for clinical supervision with the SLT Clinical Lead and work closely with the Deputy Head of Therapies for the Site to ensure a safe and efficient service. The site encourages clinical audit, research and service development.
