Eastman Dental Hospital (EDH) is looking to recruit 10 student dental nurses to participate in their 12 month pre-registration training programme, leading to the National Exam Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) Diploma in Dental Nursing qualification.

The EDH Education Centre’s dental nursing course will be delivered via high quality educational learning experiences alongside a variety of clinical and practical placement settings.

This is a 12 month, full-time training course that runs from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm. However, in some instances you may be asked to work within the hours of 8am to 8pm based on the implementation of our new clinical timetables but you will be given prior notice of this wherever possible.

The training is delivered through the following:-
  • ‘Block teaching’, for one week, Mon – Fri in the classroom setting where you be given theoretical teaching to support your training and development followed by:-
  • 3 weekly ‘clinical teaching blocks’
  • Placement(s) within a General Dental Practice (GDP) potentially for 1 day per week or via block placements (TBC).

All applicants will need to be prepared to travel to GDP placements in order to fulfil the clinical training requirements of the programme across primary and secondary dental care settings.

During your clinical placements within the hospital you will work in the following departments:
  • Endodontic department
  • Orthodontic department
  • Paediatric department
  • Periodontal department
  • Procedure Zone (covering surgical procedures across 4 specialities’)
  • Prosthodontic department

Potentially you will also get the opportunity to experience a placement within our research department working with qualified dental nurses involved in dental research programmes.

There will also be opportunities to attend day release placements in:-
  • Community Dental Practice
  • Radiography department
  • Macmillan Cancer Centre

You will receive a corporate induction covering statutory and mandatory training such as safeguarding vulnerable adults and basic life support among other topics.

Within the first month of the programme you will be given a full, one month induction where core dental topics will be covered such as infection control and law and ethics.

Following on from this you will be expected to complete a short Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) to ensure that you are fully prepared to start your rotations within the settings listed.

Students’ will also be expected to complete:
  • The NEBDN Record of Experience (RoE) as evidence of your clinical knowledge and skills across a range of dental procedures.

There will be strict RoE submission deadlines which must be adhered in order for you to continue your placement on the course.
  • Regular assessments within classroom based sessions
  • Homework assignments
  • Mock written examinations
  • Mock OSCE examinations

All of the above assessments will take place at regular intervals throughout the course. You will be expected to meet set deadlines in order for you to continue on the course.

To successfully complete the Diploma in Dental Nursing you must pass the following:-

NEBDN Written Examination (November 2020)


NEBDN OSCE Examinations (January 2021).

It is essential that all students’ can effectively and efficiently manage working full time (35 hours per week) alongside the demands of being a learner, meeting all deadlines as required.

Entry Criteria:

GCSE or equivalent

Grades A – C in English Language, a Biological Science and one other
