Job Purpose
To ensure that medicines are ordered and supplied in a correct, optimal and timely manner To undertake duties as part of the pharmacy team

To support and complement the work of other members in the team in the interests of patients
Key Results Areas
To dispense medicines in an accurate and timely manner for inpatients and outpatients as directed by senior technicians using the pharmacy computer system and automated dispensing devices where in place.

To participate in the ward top up service and the direct distribution of IV fluids

To cover the Outpatient reception receiving prescriptions, checking payment exemptions and taking payment where appropriate

To participate in the provision of a safe, efficient and timely pharmaceutical distribution service to all customers.

To efficiently use the pharmacy computer system to manage stock control.

To communicate effectively with a variety of support staff and customers e.g., purchasing dispensaries and ward staff
Main Duties and Responsibilities Dispensary
1 . To dispense medicines in an accurate and timely manner for inpatients and outpatients of the trust as directed by senior technicians using the pharmacy computer system and automated dispensing devices where in place.

  • To cover the Outpatient reception receiving prescriptions (following Standard Operating

  • Procedures) checking payment exemptions and taking payment where appropriate
  • To ensure all filing of prescriptions and other documentation is complete

  • 5. To ensure all work is logged in and out of the pharmacy waiting time manager system
  • To ensure all medicines delivered to wards are placed in sealed bags to ensure security in the transport of medicines within the hospital
  • To print off electronic discharges
  • To ensure that the dispensary has adequate supplies of medicine bottles, bags spoons, measures and syringes and ordering these on a when required basis
  • To ensure equipment used in the dispensary is clean and ready for everyday use

  • 10. Posting prescriptions to patients

    Stock Management Duties

    1. To participate in the ward top up service and the direct distribution of IV fluids

    2. To assist with the ordering, receipt and issue of stock items to wards and departments using the pharmacy computer system
  • To record the receipt of ward/department stock deliveries from Pharmacy Business and Distribution Centre
  • To transmit and record the receipt of UCL orders from Pharmacy Business and Distribution Centre
  • To return stock and or dispose of returned items following departmental procedures
  • To put away Dispensary stock drugs, according to departmental procedures of stock rotation
  • To maintain out of hours stock levels in the emergency cupboards
  • Inputting medicine into the Robots
  • To order and maintain Medical Gas stock Levels

  • Distribution Service

    1 . To ensure medicines are stored in the correct manner according to their specific temperature and hazard storage conditions (COSHH) e.g. flammables, cytotoxic drugs
  • To participate in the moving of heavy pallets and cages as well as lifting large numbers of IV fluid boxes and other heavy goods.
  • Using any necessary equipment, once adequately trained and maintaining the equipment to a high standard e.g. pallet truck
  • Maintaining the stock and storage area of the specified allocated sections/bays within pharmacy distribution according to procedures.
  • Communicating effectively with a variety of support staff and customers e.g. computer team, purchasing team, quality control team and dispensaries
  • Participating in the provision of a safe, efficient and timely pharmaceutical distribution service to all customers.
