Job Description

Main duties of the job

The Trial Manager will coordinate multifunctional team(s) comprising: academics, clinicians, statisticians, research assistants and Experts by Experience such as service users and carers (PPI contributors) to project manage CaFI throughout its lifecycle. This will include protocol development, study set-up (including regulatory approvals), site and progress monitoring, on-going study management, closeout and reporting for the Chief Investigator (CI) Professor Dawn Edge. The post holder will ensure that the study is conducted in accordance with the relevant clinical trial regulations. The post holder will also contribute to development and submission of related grant applications.

The role requires a research professional with experience and excellence in clinical trials conduct and management, including familiarity with the regulatory environment surrounding clinical trials. There is an opportunity for the post holder to gain a formal qualification in clinical trials management as part of continued professional development (CPD).

As the research focuses on improving African and Caribbean people's mental health, relevant experience of working with/understanding these communities will be considered an advantage.

The post-holder will be involved in participant recruitment, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination including preparing the final study report, academic papers, and conference presentations.

Essential criteria
  • •1st or 2:1 honours degree (or equivalent) in health sciences, social sciences (or related) with knowledge of the subject area
  • PhD in relevant subject area or equivalent experience


Knowledge/Experience
Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of implementing randomised controlled trials e.g. understanding of governance and legislative processes, blinding and unblinding procedures etc.
  • A sound knowledge of statistical software packages e.g. NVivo, SPSS & STATA.
  • Awareness and understanding of Research Governance Framework.


Desirable criteria
  • Understanding/knowledge of issues relating to mental illness in the African and Caribbean communities in the UK.


Skills and Abilities
Essential criteria
  • Ability to understand, analyse and interpret complex data and research governance information
  • Excellent interpersonal, supervision and communication skills (verbal, written, electronic).
  • Ability to develop study and office systems to enable effective running of the trial across sites including management of risk, study resources and personnel.
  • Ability to organise, manage and accurately report meetings, including use of virtual communications.


Desirable criteria
  • Ability to effectively use social media and non-traditional approaches to engage service users, carers and the public in research.


Other Requirements
Essential criteria
  • There is a frequent requirement to travel to sites across the UK to coordinate the trial, attend meetings and relevant events.
