The post holder will work with the clerical and consultant team to ensure the delivery of a seamless service for patients referred to the department for their care.
Key duties include providing an efficient, high quality specialised secretarial support service to one or more consultants and their clinical teams, maintaining information on the hospital administration system, processing patient referrals and results, dealing directly with enquiries in person and on the telephone from patients and GP's, liaising with other directorates, and general administrative and secretarial duties.
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day management of a team of associate medical secretaries and will support the assistant service manager.

Essential criteria
- NVQ Level III in a related subject or equivalent level of knowledge
- AMSPAR Medical Secretary Diploma or equivalent experience
Previous experience

- Proven post qualifying experience in a comparable medical secretarial role, including experience of typing clinics from audio tapes and providing organisation and support to one or more consultants
Desirable criteria
- Experience of Carenotes, EPR, EPIC, and Microsoft Office applications
Skills/ Knowledge/ Ability

- Advanced keyboard skills
- Advanced knowledge of medical terminology
- Excellent IT skills, experience using the full range of Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to work on own initiative and with minimal supervision
- Polite and confident manner
- Ability to work effectively as member of a team
- Ability to develop good working relationships with colleagues at all levels
- Ability to deal tactfully and efficiently with members of the public and reassure them whilst maintaining patient confidentiality at all times
- Excellent organisational skills, with a demonstrable ability to manage and prioritise workload and work methodically, efficiently and accurately to meet tight deadlines
- Demonstrable communication and influencing skills with an ability to communicate in both verbal and written format
- Ability to advise on and propose changes to office systems
