The role:

The post holder will be an enthusiastic Assistant Psychologist, who has a high degree of engagement, strong and professional communication skills, and a willingness to learn and develop new skills.

The post holder will have a vital role in the delivery of psychological services to older people with mental health difficulties, to the assessment of adults of any age who may be developing a dementia, and in delivery, or supporting the delivery of psychosocial interventions. You will carry out neuropsychological assessments under the supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist within the Dementia Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment Services ('Memory Clinic'); assist in provision of post-diagnostic interventions; support assessment and treatment of care home residents referred to the community mental health team for older people. You may also be involved in dementia engagement and empowerment work and the provision of low-level psychological therapeutic interventions.

The post holder will work under the line management and clinical supervision of a clinical/counselling psychologist, with undergraduate psychology students on placement and trainee clinical psychologists.

The post holder will contribute to clinical administrative procedures, audit, service development and MSNAP accreditation procedures, in order to support the team to provide a high quality service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Swale CMHSOP is a small, friendly and welcoming team. While the role of Assistant Psychologist works within the service structure of Psychological Services for Older People, the role and day-to-day work is situated within a multi-disciplinary community team that includes Psychiatrists, Community Psychiatric Nurses, Admiral Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Support Workers and administrative staff. The locality also has a Dementia Engagement and Empowerment (DEEP) group, Pathfinders, and a locally based Dementia Envoy.

Our Psychological Services for Older People provide Continual Professional Development (CPD) activities together, as well as offering monthly psychological practice meetings and peer supervisions.

This is a varied and busy post, which will provide you with opportunities to learn and develop invaluable skills, both clinically and organisationally, and we have a good track record of previous Assistant Psychologists gaining places on the Clinical Psychology doctorate courses after their posts with us.

JOB PURPOSE:
To support and enhance the professional psychological care of clients within a community setting in the Swale locality. To work directly with clients and their carers within the overall operational framework of Psychological Services for Older People and OPMH operational policies.

The post holder will be based in the Swale Community Mental Health Team for Older People, working with a small psychology team, providing psychological assessments and psychological interventions under the direct supervision of a qualified clinical psychologist, and working independently according to an agreed plan.
