Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The successful Senior Clinical Coder will have:
  • Hold theNCCQ
  • Significant experience of working in clinical coding using ICD10 5th edition and OPCS 4.9 covering multiple specialities
  • Experience of working to targets and KPI’s
  • Ability to apply national standards and local policies across a wide range of specialities and across highly complex coding scenarios
  • The capability to work efficiently as an individual and as part of a team
  • Excellent communication skills, with the aptitude to relay complex coding information to a range of people including other clinical coding, operational and clinical staff
  • Hold good IT skills

This role is only suitable for existing clinical coders who are already working at the above levels, using the listed classifications and who meet the criteria listed in the person specification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Essential criteria
  • To hold and maintain a detailed understanding of national clinical coding standards with the abilty to apply these across a wide range of coding scenarios, often highly complex
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology to aid accurate clinical coding,
  • To have a working knowledge of local clinical coding policies and their application, with the ability to relay these to their wider coding
  • Ability to apply national standards and local coding polices across a wide range of specialities and highly complex coding scenarios
  • Problem solving skills and an ability to practically apply clinical codes to complex coding scenarios, whereby there may be no national or local standard to accurately reflect the
  • Ability to work to demanding timescales and at times changing deadlines
  • Works efficiently as an individual and as part of a team
  • Is able to work flexibility across teams and specialities within the department
  • Self-management and an ability to achieve targets and KPIs as defined by the clinical coding business manager and divisional leads
  • Is able to maintain a working knowledge of local policies and national standards as they change and / or develop
  • Ability to work autonomously within the remits of the post, without direct instruction or supervision
  • Excellent communication skills, with an ability to relay complex coding information to other clinical coding, operational staff and clinicians
  • Be confident in the use of clinical IT systems and interrogating electronic patient records to abstract information for clinical coding
  • Confident in the use Microsoft Office application and other relevant IT software packages required


Work experience
Essential criteria
  • Significant experience of working in clinical coding, within an acute hospital setting covering multiple specialities
  • Significant practical coding experience across a wide range of specialities
  • Experience of working to challenging and tight deadlines, both individually and as a team
  • Experience of working to targets and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Use of patient administration systems and associated clinical coding applications / encoder systems
  • Experience of using both paper records and electronic records to extract clinical information for the purpose of clinical coding


Education/training/qualificati
Essential criteria
  • Undertaken the National Clinical Coding Qualification and achieved Accredited Clinical Coder (ACC) status
  • He/she must have a degree qualification, or equivalent experience in clinical coding, within an acute hospital setting
  • Maintain continued professional development, including Clinical Coding Refresher courses and other relevant training


Desirable criteria
  • To hold the ECDL qualification or equivalent qualification / experience
