Knowledge, Training, Experience and Skills Required
- Registered health care professional with a Post Graduate qualification in Obstetric Ultrasound from an accredited University or equivalent, or a UK recognised qualification.
- Has undertaken a minimum 300 hours in depth practical ultrasound training, understands the technology and safety issues relating to diagnostic ultrasound, is familiar with normal and abnormal fetal anatomy, has expert knowledge of fetal abnormalities and is confident and competent to work autonomously.
- Competency in use of ultrasound equipment to accurately acquire and interpret diagnostic information relating to fetal anatomy and maternal pelvic anatomy, make decisions to modify diagnostic ultrasound examinations as appropriate, such as selecting a trans vaginal scan or make decisions to perform Doppler studies.
- Able to acquire precise measurements of fetal size at every gestation and interpret this information; know when to change the Estimated Date of Delivery, if and when to arrange a further scan, or when additional tests may be indicated, such as Doppler studies if fetal compromise is suspected
- Competent to undertake the full range of obstetric scans; dating, anomaly, assessment of fetal well-being, measurement of growth and Doppler studies, including high risk pregnancies, multiple pregnancies. First Trimester Combined Screening would be preferable but not essential.
- Effective communication skills to convey complex scan results to women and relatives in a clear sensitive manner, and give evidence based information, support and advice when a fetal abnormality or death is detected
- Have evidence of continuing professional development in ultrasound.
- Knowledge of up to date developments and contemporary issues in obstetric ultrasound policy and practice
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Negligence Scheme for Trusts
- Effective communication/interpersonal skills. Completion of a study course in communication/breaking bad news would be beneficial.
Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
- Work as integrated member of the antenatal clinic team.
- Maintain, develop and implement evidence based professional ultrasound knowledge and competencies.
- To be professionally accountable for one’s own practice and abide by Trust guidelines and protocols.
- Maintain own professional development in keeping up to date with developments in field.
- Undertake the full range of obstetric scans for a minimum of 18.5 hours per week, to maintain clinical expertise within this field. Interpret scan appearances, exercising judgement in the identification and assessment of more complex conditions such as determining Chorionicity in multiple pregnancies where the diagnosis will affect management of the pregnancy, and conveying results to women and their partners in a clear sensitive manner.
- To communicate effectively with a wide range of people in a manner consistent with their level of understanding, culture and background to explore complex issues and decision making.
- Report on and make recommendations on patient care, including referrals based on the interpretation of the ultrasound examinations to the appropriate professionals.
- Report any deviation from the normal to the appropriate Obstetrician/Fetal Medicine Specialist
- Work as an autonomous practitioner, accountable for own ultrasound scan examinations.
- Have regard for the workload and pressure on professional colleagues, support and assist as required
- Liaise with and give specialist ultrasound information and advice to other health care professionals – medical staff, GPs, community and hospital midwives, student midwives, physiotherapists, radiographers.
- Responsible for safe use of expensive specialist equipment, data entry, accurate reporting on both computer based and hand held patient records.
