Job overview

To provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to service users within the Mother and Infant Mental Health Service (MIMHS) across the county of Kent.

The Mother and Infant Mental Health Service (MIMHS) is a Specialist Perinatal Mental Health Community service that covers the whole of Kent and Medway. MIMHS specialises in the assessment, diagnosis and short-term treatment of women aged 18 and above who are affected by a moderate to severe mental health illness in the preconception, antenatal and postnatal period.

To provide a high standard of Occupational Therapy assessment and treatment to service users within the Mother and Infant Mental Health Service (MIMHS) across the county of Kent.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will provide specialist Occupational Therapy services to mothers, infants and families during the perinatal period; delivering specialist OT assessment, therapy, advice, supervision and consultation as required. The role will include active involvement in the multi-disciplinary development of the Specialist Community Perinatal Mental Health Service. The post holders will work autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the service's policies and procedures.

The post-holders may work in various settings including primary/secondary care community venues such as GP practices, maternity units, Children's Centres, client's homes and inpatient settings. The candidates must hold a diploma / degree in occupational therapy and professional accreditation/registration with the HCPC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
  • To establish a therapeutic rapport with service users at an early stage in their care pathway.
  • To assess the Occupational Therapy specific needs of the allocated service user group.
  • To select and apply Occupational Therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits.
  • To work collaboratively with the patient to identify and select an appropriate specialist intervention plan which aims to achieve therapeutic goals, maximising functional ability and well-being and balancing the complex interaction of risk, safety, patient choice and independence.
  • To apply a high level of understanding of the effects of mental illness and provide psycho-education; information and advice on lifestyle changes and adaptations of the service user's social and physical environment in order to promote recovery.
  • To ensure all interventions are based on best practice and clinical research where available.
  • To provide information, advice, support to carers/families/others as appropriate.
  • To work in close co-operation with other staff in the team, and with community mental health teams attending relevant multi-disciplinary meetings and participating in the CPA process offering specialist clinical advice and information, where required.
  • To provide Occupational Therapy in settings most appropriate to the service user/activity e.g. community settings, service user's home, children's centres, working flexible hours if required.
  • To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment using outcome measurement tools to ensure effectiveness.
  • To plan and develop opportunities for service users to engage in a group programme and/or individual interventions using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals.
  • To establish links with local resources that will sustain service user's recovery and assist in facilitating their transition through the care pathway.
  • To regularly attend and actively participate in a variety of meetings, both clinical and professional, offering verbal reports on treatment, interventions and service developments as appropriate.
