Job Purpose

To assist the pharmacy team to provide an exemplary pharmacy service to the hospital and its customers, working within own level of competence and in accordance with current legislation, accepted professional and ethical standards and Spire Healthcare policies and procedures.

Contribute to the safe and effective use of medicines, ensuring cost efficiency.

    Specific Responsibilities

  • Undertake activities to assist in delivering pharmaceutical care.
    • Undertake routine activities, as delegated, accurately and in compliance with current legislation, accepted professional standards and Spire Healthcare policies and procedures.
    • Work within own scope of practice and competence.
    • Prepare self, equipment, materials and medicines appropriately for the specific activity being undertaken.
    • Accurately dispense medicines for patients according to their prescription, ensuring each is checked by a pharmacist.
    • Accurately prepare small batches of pre-packed and/or overlabelled medicines as required, ensure all are checked by a pharmacist.
    • Accurately record data and information related to activities and passes it on to the relevant person in the team on time, or file in the appropriate place.
    • Identify and report to the appropriate person any significant changes within the pharmacy department, or with regards the service as a whole, that might affect the health and well being of patients.


    2. Assist in delivering a pharmacy service that meets individuals' health and wellbeing needs
    • When dealing with patients respect their privacy, dignity, wishes and beliefs and minimise any necessary anxiety with regard to their medicines.
    • Support patients throughout encouraging them to promote their own health and well being.


    3. Assist with the movement and management of medicines.
    • Discuss and agree with other members of the pharmacy team the activities to be undertaken to ensure the safe, appropriate and secure movement of medicines.
    • Assist in the purchase of medicines in compliance with Spire Healthcare purchasing agreements where applicable.
    • Receive medicines and check against the order correctly identifying any errors and reporting them to the appropriate people.
    • Assist with the control and monitoring of medicines stored in the pharmacy. Ensure medicines are stored correctly according to the manufacturer recommendations. Ensure stock rotation, identify short dated or expired medicines and report to the appropriate people.
    • Assist with stocktaking activities.
    • Assist with the supply of medicines to hospital departments in accordance with pharmacy procedures. Select medicines correctly and ensure their safe and secure transfer to the appropriate department.
    • Assist with the monitoring of medicines in hospital departments, offering advice when appropriate.
    • Communicate effectively with department staff to ensure efficiency and compliance with all pharmaceutical standards and laws.


    4. Modify and structure data, computer records and stock management documents.
    • Record, input, amend, delete and modify data accurately and completely using the correct procedure for both manual and electronic systems.
    • Assist with the maintenance of the computerised pharmacy stock management system. Update purchasing files, issue stock to departments when appropriate, charge medicines to patient accounts in a timely manner.
    • Check stock management and charging activities with computer printouts, report discrepancies and errors and make the appropriate corrections if within level of competence.
    • Access requested data accurately and on time, using the correct procedure to ensure the integrity of the data is maintained.
