Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide specialist psychotherapy assessment of clients with complex and long standing mental health difficulties referred to the mental health team, utilising information from a broad range of structured psychometric and semi-structured clinical methodologies and integrating it into a psychological formulation of the client and the psychosocial environment, drawing on evidence based, informed theoretical
perspectives.

To formulate and implement plans of specialist psychotherapy treatment or
management of clients' mental health problems based on a theoretically informed understanding and current evidence-based best practice.

To undertake a range of psychological interventions, adapted and tailored to the needs of the individual and the context and ongoing evaluation of the outcomes of the intervention.

To be responsible for providing a specialist psychotherapy perspective in the multidisciplinary assessment of service users and their families.

To contribute specialist psychotherapy advice to the multi-disciplinary formulation of appropriate therapeutic approaches or intervention plans, and to be involved in, or oversee specialist psychological aspects of their implementation in collaboration with other staff.

To undertake psychologically based risk assessment and risk management for relevant clients and provide advice on the psychological aspects of risk to the multi-disciplinary team.

When appropriate to consult with and provide specialist psychological guidance to carers and families of service users.

To exercise autonomous professional judgement and responsibility for the
psychological management of clients on own caseload.

To teach psychotherapy to other professions and trainees of other professions in the collaboration with other professional tutors and teachers.

To be responsible for regularly consulting to and advising colleagues from other professions on psychotherapy assessment and treatment methods.

To teach, advise and consult with carers and community groups on psychological elements of mental health problems and their care.

To participate in the specialist training of other Psychotherapists in collaboration with senior psychologists, as appropriate.

To participate in multi-disciplinary meetings concerned with the delivery and development of clinical services and contribute a psychological/psychotherapeutic perspective as appropriate.

To contribute as required to the planning and development of the operational policies and service delivery in the Secondary Care psychological Therapy Service undertaking agreed project work.

To advise service and professional management on areas where issues of
psychological need should be addressed.

To develop and maintain good communication links with the NHS, Social Services and other agencies working in the area of Adult Mental Health.

To remain informed of and critically evaluate current research to support evidence based practice in own professional work and to contribute this perspective in the multidisciplinary team.

To contribute to project management of complex audit, assisting colleagues to develop service provision.

To contribute to the evaluation of the Psychological Therapy Services by participating in service-related research and evaluation projects, as agreed with the Head of Specialty.

To initiate and conduct psychologically based research relevant to the care of adults with complex and long-standing mental health difficulties, as agreed with the Head of Specialty.

Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria

  • Post-graduate doctoral level training in Clinical or Counselling Psychology (or its equivalent for those trained prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS/relevant body.

Desirable criteria
  • Qualification in Group work


ExperienceEssential criteria
  • At least 2 years post qualification experience working in Secondary Care Mental Health Team
  • Experience of working in range of mental health settings with a range of levels of disability and full range of age groups.


Knowledge/SkillsEssential criteria
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate verbally and in writing highly complex and sensitive information in a manner appropriate to a range of settings and audiences, including complex highly emotive situations and those with significantly impaired communication capacities
  • Ability to analyse and manage complex multi-factorial clinical information from a range of sources integrating it into a formulation utilising a variety of psychological perspectives.
