Job Description

This is an excellent opportunity for the successful candidate to join a dynamic and innovative Trauma and Orthopaedic team which is looking to appoint a keen and enthusiastic Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, with a special interest in both trauma and pelvic fracture surgery.

As the leading provider of tertiary and specialist healthcare services in Manchester, we treat more than a million patients every year. Our specialist hospitals are home to hundreds of world class clinicians and academic staff committed to finding our patients the best care and treatments.

The major trauma service at Manchester Royal Infirmary (MRI) has recently been restructured and significant resource is being invested in the service. Pelvic Fracture Services have traditionally been provided by Royal Albert Edward Hospital, Wigan Hospital, part of Wigan, Wrightington and Leigh Trust (WWL), with patients transferred to Wigan from receiving hospitals in the North West. The advent of Major Trauma Centres has concentrated patients in the Manchester, Preston and Liverpool Major Trauma Centres (MTCs), requiring development of pelvic fracture services on these sites. Within Greater Manchester, the two MTCs in Salford and MRI have a Service Line Agreement (SLA) with WWL to provide pelvic fracture advice, ward rounds and operating. This appointment is planned to aid with the transfer of the majority of this service to MRI to provide a more rounded approach and reduce need for patient transfers. The appointee would be expected to work co-operatively with colleagues at WWL and Salford to provide a comprehensive city-wide service. Travel to the Salford site is not expected to be necessary but may be required in emergency situations.

In line with this vision there is a need for the post holder appointed to this post to work as part of team both on the MRI site (where this post will be based initially) but also as a part of the wider team across MFT. As the T&O integration work progresses, there are plans for further development of services and possibly future relocation. Hence there is a need for the successful candidate to be able to work flexibly across the hospital sites.

We plan to have specialist pelvic trauma lists that this post holder will undertake.

The post holder will be primarily based at Manchester Royal Infirmary and the Trafford General Hospital but will be expected to work flexibly across multiple sites.

The successful candidate should be fellowship trained and have completed CCST along with full GMC registration and a license to practice in the UK is required.

The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary team approach alongside of medical staff, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals.

The post will commence as soon as possible.
