Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities Develop a vision and strategic direction and lead on the development, planning/implementation and evaluation of long-term strategies, operational policies and standards for all clinical pharmacy services provided within and external to the Trust, and ensure that these fit with and support the Pharmacy Department and Trust strategies.
Provide effective and enabling leadership across teams and contribute to the culture of leadership promoting equality and the value of diversity.
Deputise for the Chief Pharmacist as required.
Participate in the Pharmacy Improvement programme, managing a series of improvement projects within the department and outwards across the Trust
Build a development plan for clinical pharmacy aimed at designing services to meet Trust and patient needs, (includes risk management strategies) which details future service provision and incorporates set objectives for all key areas and personnel.
Develop a strategy for development and deployment of specialist pharmacist posts
Ensure the maintenance and continued development of capacity and demand plans for pharmacy services.
Deputise for the Chief Pharmacist and represent the Trust in external networks, influencing, contributing to and maintaining awareness of national and regional clinical pharmacy strategies, policies, standards and changes in political agendas.
Ensure that the Pharmacy service is compliant with requirements of the RPS standards for Hospital Pharmacy services and local and national guidelines.
Monitor service performance and compliance through the use of audits, the collection and analysis of relevant management data, identifying areas for improvement, implementing changes and ensuring the spread of best practice throughout the department.
Support clinical research and development and project management programmes
Develop and evaluate methods and processes for gathering, analysing, interpreting and presenting clinical and pharmacoeconomic data and information.
Ensure all staff in clinical areas work within service and clinical guidelines and have a good working knowledge of national and local standards.
Ensure that a review of policies, protocols and procedures is undertaken across the clinical pharmacy services, and that gaps are identified and acted upon.
Ensure that the team is aware of audit requirements relating to these policies and that they are built into the service improvement plan so that the audit programme is robust.
Responsible for developing innovative clinical pharmacy service models to improve the safety and quality of care and work and in partnership with other MDT colleagues, NHS Trusts, CCGs, HEIs, HEE and not for profit organisations etc...
To undertake workforce/capacity planning and skill mix reviews ensuring staff resources are used optimally and staffing levels and capabilities are maintained at safe levels at all times.
To ensure effective communication systems are maintained and developed

Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria
  • BPharm / MPharm/ BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
  • Postgraduate diploma in a relevant Pharmacy discipline (eg Clinical, General Pharmacy Practice)
  • Specialist higher degree or portfolio of experience at senior managerial level


Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of relevant regulations and legislation
  • Knowledge of the requirements of national organisations involved in clinical pharmacy e.g. DoH, RPS, UKCPA.
  • Knowledge of financial reporting and budget statements


Experience Essential criteria
  • Experience of working in NHS hospitals
  • Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals outside of Pharmacy to achieve cross -Trust developments
  • Experience of managing large number of staff


Skills Essential criteria
  • Be able to concentrate on highly complex matters (drug use evaluations, drug query answering, clinical prescription review, checking of dispensed prescriptions) despite frequent interruptions.
  • Demonstrate emotional maturity and resilience when dealing with complex issues
  • Have experience of disciplinary matters and be able to impart results from them to staff in an appropriate and considered manner.
