Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To be an active member of the multi-professional Occupational Therapy Team, delivering a comprehensive assessment and treatment package to patients within the Trevor Gibbens Unit.

  • To effectively establish a therapeutic relationship with clients and their families, using communication, reasoning and negotiation skills, managing barriers to communication and dealing sensitively with prognostic information.
  • To select and apply Occupational Therapy assessments for a designated caseload, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits within the selected model of practice.
  • To carry a clinical caseload and manage this effectively through clinical supervision.
  • To identify and select with the client an appropriate intervention plan which aims to achieve therapeutic goals through individual or group work, maximising functional ability and wellbeing and balancing the complex interaction of risk, safety, client choice, and independence.
  • To implement a therapeutic activity programme for service users on the allocated unit with other team members.
  • To evaluate interventions alongside senior Occupational Therapy staff.
  • To participate in all relevant clinical and team meetings to contribute to the optimum level of care for all service users.
  • To seek opinion from other relevant professionals to inform analysis and reasoning where appropriate.
  • To provide a specialist opinion of a client's occupational needs and functional ability, making recommendations to inform the care plans of other colleagues.
  • To ensure that all interventions are carried out in a safe environment, minimising risk at all times.
  • To liaise with health and social care professionals and other statutory, private and voluntary organisations involved in the clients care, providing written reports, recommendations and referrals when appropriate.
  • To promote awareness of the role of occupational therapy within the service, negotiating priorities where appropriate.

Person specificationQualificationsEssential criteria
  • Diploma / degree in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC registration

KnowledgeEssential criteria
  • Client centred practice
  • Use of activities therapeutically

Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of MOHO

ExperienceEssential criteria
  • Experience working in mental health settings

Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in forensic mental health
  • Experience supervising staff or students

SkillsEssential criteria
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to reflect on practice

Desirable criteria
  • Group work skills
