Job Description

Detailed job description and main responsibilities The post holder will join a long-established Practitioner Psychology team providing high quality and evidence-based psychological care as part of the Manchester Adult Cystic Fibrosis Centre (MACFC) at Wythenshawe Hospital (MFT). The purpose of this post is to provide highly specialist psychological assessment, intervention and therapy to adult patients of MACFC at the same time as offering supervision and consultation on clients' psychological care to non-psychologist colleagues as required. The post holder will be able to work autonomously within professional guidelines, to be able to deliver interventions to help adults with health management of this complex condition and will advocate for the psychological health of service users within a medically led team. They will also be able to contribute to research and audit, policy and service development within psychology services.
They will be supported by a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and a senior Clinical Psychologist who will provide leadership and clinical supervision. Opportunities to participate in service development may be available, as well as ensuring key performance targets are achieved.
The post holder will be based within the cystic fibrosis team (alongside other members of the CF Psychology team) and will carry out work in both in-patient (the dedicated CF ward) and outpatients' clinic.

Person specification Education/Qualifications Essential criteria
  • A good degree in psychology (2:1 and above) and have completed a postgraduate doctorate in Clinical/Counselling /Health Psychology.
  • Eligibility to register with the HCPC as a practitioner psychologist (Clinical, Counselling or Health)

Desirable criteria
  • Additional training in CPD in psychological therapies and/or health management interventions


Experience Essential criteria
  • Experience in delivering cognitive behaviour therapy informed interventions to individuals who are experiencing emotional distress as a result of a range of psychological disorders, through the application of knowledge and skills in psychological assessment and intervention acquired through doctorate level training, or additional CPD activities and clinical supervision.
  • Experience in offering appropriate assessment of clients, to use judgement in the planning of care, and to implement specific evidence-based therapy programmes
  • Experience of undertaking specific validated psychometric testing of patients

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within acute medical environments with potentially distressed patients and/or carers and family members
  • Experience of liaising with and supporting acute hospital staff


Knowledge Essential criteria
  • Be able to provide effective liaison with colleagues in the wider Cystic Fibrosis MDT, as well as other statutory/non-statutory services relevant to the patient and their ongoing needs

Desirable criteria
  • Some knowledge of national service frameworks/drivers in relation to clients of the adult cystic fibrosis service, and of relevant mental health legislation.


Skills and Abilities Essential criteria
  • Communicate directly with patients, carers/relatives and other healthcare professionals, complex and potentially emotive information regarding the patient's condition, treatment and prognosis.
  • Ability to use own initiative and to work under supervision where appropriate.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team and to liaise effectively with other professionals

Desirable criteria
  • Skills in providing consultation that can inform and promote psychological well-being to other professionals and non-professional groups working/associated with Cystic Fibrosis.


Other Essential criteria
  • • Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.

Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working within a multicultural framework.
